Botox

Botox shots block certain chemical signals from nerves that cause muscles to contract. The most common use of these injections is to relax the facial muscles that cause frown lines and other facial wrinkles.

Considering Botox?

How Does It Work?

Botox is the brand name for botulinum toxin type A, which relaxes the muscles beneath the skin temporarily.  Once injected into targeted areas in the face, Botox blocks your nerve signals that cause muscle contractions which in return helps smooth out wrinkles and fine lines.

Often used to treat dynamic wrinkles in the forehead, Crow’s feet, and frown lines.  It is FDA approved.

How Do I Prepare For Botox?

To have the best results do the following:

    • stay away from alcohol for at least 24 hours before appointment
    • stop taking blood thinners (ibprofen, aspirin, and some supplements) for one to two weeks before treatment to reduce bruising risk (consult your primary doctor before hand)
    • limit caffeine intake including coffee a day before
    • drink lots of water and use moisturizer leading up to your appointment to hydrate skin and help botox set more evenly
    • no waxing, tweezing, or bleach treatments close to appointment

    What Should I Expect?

Here at Plano Health MD, Dr. Rakkar strives to make sure each and every patient has their questions heard and answered to the best of his abilities.
After the first Botox appointment patients should know that patient it takes for muscles to relax and wrinkles to soften so there will not be immediate results.  Most people notice the full benefit within two weeks.  Requires little to no recovery time and you can resume daily activities immediately.

    Minor side effects:
includes bruising (which should fade in a few days), mild headache (should resolve quickly) and swelling (which is normal immediately after treatment).

How Long Should I Expect Botox Results To Last?

Remember Botox is not a permanent solution, you will need to come back every three to four months to maintain results. Other factors can change how long your botox lasts including:

    • metabolism (faster metabolism may need sooner touch-ups)
    • age (younger people tend to have better elasticity of the skin so often lasts longer)
    • area treated (some areas like the forehead with stronger muscles may require more frequent touch-ups)
    • amount of botox (if treated with large amount results may last longer)
    • lifestyle factors (smoking, excessive sun exposure and lots of exercise can impact effectiveness)
